What is the correlation between the Covid-19 mortality rates and housing type? Statistics Canada has released a census studying Covid-19 mortality rates by housing type. The highest mortality rates were found among those residing in high-rise buildings. A low-income high rise building, in particular, has come in as the top housing type. However, there is one key exception.
Covid-19 Mortality Rates in Low-income Housing Types
Density is, of course, the main attributing factor to the result of this census. The mortality rates for low-income residents of high-rise buildings came in at 65 per 100,000 people. This rate is approximately three times the rate of low-income single-family detached residents (23 per 100,000).
Exception for Mortality Rate By Dwelling Type
More dense housing type=higher mortality rate. That seems to be the equation describing the correlation between Covid-19 and housing type. However, exceptions are present in the form of semi-detached and townhouse units. Those dwelling in duplexes, low-rise and high-rise apartments had mortality rates 2 times higher than those living in single-detached homes. Multi-residential buildings increase the chance of coming into close contact with others frequently. This can occur in elevators and elevators, as well as other high-traffic areas.
